Processes for Treatment of Heavy Metals in Ash from Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators

چکیده

Modem municipal waste combustors (MWC's) process approximately 100 million tons of refuse each year in the United States, Europe and Japan, producing 30 million tons of ash. The incineration process has the effect of concentrating the toxic heavy metals normally present in municipal refuse. As a result, the ash may require treatment to reduce the quantity or the mobility of heavy metals within the ash. Four treatment categories are discussed: stabilization, extraction, vitrification and solidification. Within each category a variety of treatment processes are reviewed. Numerous methods have been shown to be successful in laboratory-scale tests and full scale trials. Several processes have been in continuous, full-scale use for several years including: stabilization using cement; stabilization using phosphate; stabilization by lime addition; and vitrification processes.

Heavy Metals Removal from Sewage Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) by Co-Composting Process

Background & Aims of the Study: One of the most important pollutants in drinking water, air and soils is heavy metals. It is very harmful for humans and other live organisms. The purpose of this study was the usage of a co-composting process for removal of heavy metals from municipal solid waste and sewage sludge. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was a condu...

Vitrification of Bottom Ash from A VR MSW incinerators

During incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW), various environmentally harmful elements and heavy metals are liberated either into bottom ash, or carried away with the off-gases and subsequently trapped in f ly ash. If these minor but harmf itl elements are not properly isolated and immobilized, it can lead to secondary environmental pol/ution to the air, soil and water. The stricter envi...

Recycling of Pre-Washed Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator Fly Ash in the Manufacturing of Low Temperature Setting Geopolymer Materials

In this work, three samples of municipal solid waste incinerators fly ash (MSWI-FA) have been stabilized in systems containing coal fly ash to create geopolymers through a polycondensation reaction. Monolithic products have been obtained with both MSWI fly ash as received and after the partial removal of chloride and sulfate by water washing. The polycondensation products have been characterize...

Cellular Mutagenicity and Heavy Metal Concentrations of Leachates Extracted from the Fly and Bottom Ash Derived from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration

Two incinerators in Taiwan have recently attempted to reuse the fly and bottom ash that they produce, but the mutagenicity of these types of ash has not yet been assessed. Therefore, we evaluated the mutagenicity of the ash with the Ames mutagenicity assay using the TA98, TA100, and TA1535 bacterial strains. We obtained three leachates from three leachants of varying pH values using the toxicit...

Rice Husk Ash to Stabilize Heavy Metals Contained in Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash: First Results by Applying New Pre-treatment Technology

A new technology was recently developed for municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash stabilization, based on the employment of all waste and byproduct materials. In particular, the proposed method is based on the use of amorphous silica contained in rice husk ash (RHA), an agricultural byproduct material (COSMOS-RICE project). The obtained final inert can be applied in several applicat...
